Since 2008, Head and her team of PIL researchers have interviewed and surveyed over 13,000 undergraduates at more than 60 US four-year public and private universities and colleges and two-year community colleges. Articles about PIL have appeared in The Atlantic Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Education Week, Inside Higher Education, Library Journal, and The Seattle Times. In 2013, *Library Journal* named PIL one of the "Big Four Research Studies" about library users.
Head earned her Ph.D. and MLS from U.C. Berkeley in Library and Information Science and was a Visiting Scholar, studying Human-Computer Interaction at Stanford University. From 2008 through July 2012, she co-directed PIL with Michael B. Eisenberg, Dean Emeritus and Professor in the University of Washington's Information School. Head led the 2007 exploratory information literacy study, a forerunner to PIL, at Saint Mary's College of California, where she taught as the Disney Visiting Professor in New Media for 10 years.
